Hi:

I picked up from Best Buy a Card & Board Games 2 by eGames. I wanted it
because it was supposed to have chess. Basically, I can't get it to run
(including the downloaded "patch.")

Anyway, I am doing what I should have done in the first place and am asking
if anyone knows a FREE chess game out there.

Thanks.

There are free chess playing programs, but I don't know of any
that play well. If you're a fairly decent player and want a
program that plays well, I recommend Fritz, although it isn't
free.

Go to http://chessbaseusa.sectorlink.org/DesktopDefault.aspx
The current version of Fritz is Fritz 8, and they have the
previous version, Fritz 7, on sale for $29.

I have version 5.something and it plays very well, so Fritz 7
should be excellent.

Google for "free chess" has over 2 million hits.

OK, and you suggest that I go through each of these 2 million "hits" to
determine which is, indeed, a truly FREE problem or which has "cathes."

If all you have to suggest is to "Google" then save your energy.

An this has what to do with resolving Windows XP operating system
issues? In other word off topic. So perhaps you need to learn how to
refine your searches?

You expect us to go through them for you? You are the one wanting a free
Chess game. The Internet is a big place.

Are you suggesting your time is so much more valuable than the rest of the
people in the world that we should search for and give to you the results of
this effort in the form of free Chess games?

Do a search - get a little more specific - search for "XP chess freeware"
and see what comes up. Add to the search as needed - like if you want to be
able to enter the moves in a certain way - or you want a certain level of
graphics quality - or if you want to be able to play over the Internet with
other players - etc... Put forth a little effort into something you want.

Only simple people play chess anyway (an attritional based game that gets simplier as it goes on). A REAL stratagist would be playing Go (a very complex game that gets more complex as it goes on that is not attritional based). Though one has to unlearn the rules of draughts.
