Analog Video Capture Device

I have a VHS-C camcorder that I would like to convert to digital video. I would like to know what capture device do you recomment, or what features I need to consider for capturing my video. I like the idea of connecting to a USB port verses a capture card. Also, what about resolution?

I already have WMM2 as well as ArcSoft Showbiz and Uleads Video Studio 7 for editing purposes.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi Pete,

My experience with a Dazzle 80 (low-end USB device) is that it varies with
the computer and perhaps the playing device. On my most powerful computer, a
Toshiba 2.4GHz laptop, using my Hi8 analog camcorder, I'm getting WMV files
at 640x480, 1900 kbps, 30 fps with good quality playback.... that's using a
S-video connector instead of standard RCA cables.

I've read a lot of about people having problems with the Dazzle 80, but my
experience capturing both video and audio with it is good..... but having
said that, I like the quality of the video a bit more when I capture via the
TV tuner on the laptop.... and best capturing by playing it back in a
digital8 camcorder and connecting via firewire.

If you go the USB route, be sure to ask the store that
you buy the device from if you can return it if it doesn't
work in your application... If you go down a page or two
in this newsgroup you'll see that I own a Plextor ConvertX
USB external capture device. I can't get it to capture in
MM2. There are also two other people that have issues with
external USB capture devices. One is a Pinnacle Movie Box,
the other a Dazzle 150. We are all getting the same error
messages, and yes my ConvertX does work fine with other
apps in capturing analog signals.. Good luck, CraigS
