An embedded Word document does not open at the top.

When I double click on an embedded Word document in PowerPoint, it does not
open at the top of the document. Any manipulation of the document causes the
top to disappear.

Try clicking on View, Header/Footer, then click outside the Header.

Also, keep in mind that changes made to an embedded doc stay with the
presentation and do not update the orginal doc unless you have linked them.

Could you have clicked "Hide White Space" by mistake?
Hover the mouse over the top edge of the document - If "Show White Space"
pops up >click.

have any idea what I might have checked or changed to make this happen?

See John's post about turning on/off Show Whitespace. I'm just not a good
hoverer so I just show the Header and jump out.
