Can anyone run this program: Amcap (USBPCCamPlus). I've had difficulty
getting it to work.

Do you actually have a "USB PC Cam Plus" camera? Amcap is one of the
DirectShow sample applications. It's quite possible this company modified
it so it only works with their hardware.

I have the same dental camera which is mentioned in this hyperlink
(below) on the Chinavasion downloads webpage.

Its the same software that came on the mini-CD that came with my
dental camera.

The "me too" thing is not a license to do something. ;-)

Let's face facts here - you took a shotgun approach to this - posting to the
following groups:
- microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.video
- microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.sdk
- microsoft.public.development.device.drivers
- microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware
- microsoft.public.vb.general.discussion

And you got called on it.

Not to mention that no one - thanks to your shotgun approach - can
definitively say if they are running the same operating system as you. At
best they can be decently sure you are running a 32-bit operating system.
They can take a *chance* and consider you might have known what you were
doing when you posted in, "windowsxp.hardware" amongst the total of five
groups that you did it because of the "Windows XP" part as much as the
"hardware" part. It's still pretty iffy though.

You have:
Windows ____ ______ Edition with Service Pack _, 32-bit?

You use what antivirus software?
You use what antimalware software?

You are installing this software for the actual camera - not for programming
purposes it seems - givin what you have I could assume that much - but that
too is guesswork. If true - it kinda knocks out 4 of the 5 groups you
posted to and leaves us with just the "Windows XP" based one... Which would
be good considering the camera's web page states the driver/camera is for
the following OSes:
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

"Sorry, you have no video capture hardware"

Does it work for you?

I tested "USBPCCamPlus_v5.18.1.005_120standard(1.3M).exe"
and I can see an INF file "snpstd3.inf" and it has a
bunch of Sonix/Microdia cameras in it. The VEN value
is 0C45 for those. My purpose in including this link,
is to demonstrate there are a large number of cameras
made by that manufacturer, so knowing this,
doesn't narrow down which camera this is. Knowing
both the VEN and the DEV value, narrows it down a bit more.

http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/video4linux/gspca.txt

You can look in "setupapi.log" on your C: partition, for
entries involving 0C45. That would give you some idea,
whether the driver package you installed, was being used
for the new hardware. The VEN and DEV values tell you which
camera it is. Cameras consist of a USB controller chip, plus a sensor chip,
and together they make up the camera.

usb\vid_0c45&pid_xxxx look for "vid_0c45" near the end
of your C:\WINDOWS\setupapi.log file.
The "xxxx" value will be more numbers
for your specific camera.

The camera may have come with instructions, which might suggest
to you to install the software first, then plug in the camera.
The cameras probably come in two types, ones that are UVC compliant
and older cameras where the driver is necessary for the OS to see
them. I suspect your camera needs the driver.

Now, the other place to look, is Device Manager. I just
plugged in my UVC compliant camera, and instantly Windows
recognizes it without any driver. I have an "Imaging Devices"
entry in Device Manager, and underneath that "USB Video Device".
Doing properties on that, gives USB\VID_046D&PID_0990 as
the Device Instance Id, and that is an example of using
the Device Manager to gather the same information. If you had
a non-UVC camera, you'd probably get a yellow mark for the
camera, if no driver was added to the system for its usage.

AMCap is based on sample code originally written by Microsoft.
It is probably looking for some standard software interface,
to find a video device to capture from. I don't know
right off hand, which interface that would be. But at
the very least, you can work on getting the camera
recognized first, and have a working entry for it in
Device Manager.

In Windows, if I go to Settings : Control Panels : Scanners and Cameras,
I can see a single entry in there for "USB Video Device". You
can use that entry, to test captures from your camera. But
again, that assumes your drivers are working. At the moment,
with my UVC compliant camera, it took over 30 seconds,
but eventually the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" is displaying
an image of what my camera is focused on. I can take snapshots
that way. While UVC makes the basic features of the camera
work, it is not the whole story - I need to install the driver
for my camera, in order for it to achieve its highest resolution
setting. So some custom features don't work with UVC alone.
But I can easily take test snapshots, to prove the camera
works.

If you want a program that can read devices on USB ports,
you can use a copy of UVCView for that. The details are in this
blurb I've posted before. (I've located another source for this,
but I still have to test it first.)

http://www.die.de/blog/content/binary/usbview.png

Some information on the parameters seen in UVCView.

http://www.beyondlogic.org/usbnutshell/usb5.htm

You should be able to get VEN and DEV info from a plugged
in device. That program will also help you determine whether
the camera is alive at all or not.
*******

Anyway, that may give you some ideas as to how you can prove
the camera isn't completely dead.

(To analyse the download from Chinavasion, I used Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit
running in VPC2007, with Wine 1.2 RC3 installed. Using that,
I was able to run the InstallShield exe, and get to see the files
it installed. By doing that, there was a little less risk to
my current WinXP install. I used Virustotal.com to scan the
download file, and it was clean. But I decided to use Ubuntu
anyway, as a means to insulate my real OS.)

That's because they were programmign questiosn where AMCap was used as a
diagnostic of a WDM standards compliant app.

If it doesn't recognise your device, it isn't installed correctly or has
rubbish drivers that only work with their own software.

Apologies, I didn't see your posting till Sunday. I've checked my

check each group individually.

Soon after i installed the installation file, and found amcap didn't
work, i then let windows search for a driver, an error message
appeared and i typed this into google (recorded in my google history)
which mentioned sn9c120 which must be the cameras'

http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/video4linux/gspca.txt
shows it as

Is VEN meaning vendor, and DEV meaning device?

Apologies, didn't read it properly, the computer has already got a UVC
plug and play working on your computer before taking 30 seconds to get
a picture. Then you install a special driver. But google seems to
suggest i think that Linux needs a UVC driver?

I presume your operating system is MS Windows XP because this is
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware but is probably the 32 bit
version?

http://cid-64f5892d2f88d17f.photos.live.com/self.aspx/Amcap/add remove usb pc camera plus.JPG

When I have tried to uninstall Amcap (from the mini CD I received with
the camera), it goes through the uninstall process but afterwards I go
to the start menu, programs and find it is still there and am able to
launch the program exactly as before! So I decided to resort to using
the add/remove programs feature to finally get rid of it and have
things back to how it was before.

But letting windows hunt for drivers - where it settled on the HP
Basic Starter Camera driver, I try Picasa but that doesn't get any
pictures and nothing in "Control Panel" "Scanners and Cameras".

I tried plugging in the dental camera into a 2nd PC also running
windows XP and this time i did *not* install the Amcap (USBPCCamPlus)
software. I instead decided to just let Windows automatically look for
drivers. In "Control Panel" "Scanners and Cameras" it shows HP Basic
Starter Camera and I got moving pictures! Picasa 3 also gets gets
moving pictures too.

Could the Amcap install have ruined the first computer that even an
uninstall didn't fix?

InstallShield installers, should usually have an uninstallation option.
And it should be visible in all the normal places. InstallShield would
normally do a decent job of uninstallation.

Now, I examined your driver installation, using Wine in Ubuntu 10.04
for safety. In there, I can find this directory - the contents of this,
hold portions of the USB PC Camera Plus installer. (I hope that
I have copied the directory name correctly - in the environment
I'm using, I cannot copy and paste these things.)

Program Files/InstallShield Installation Information/{ECD03DA7-5952-406A-8156-5F0C93618D1F}

In there is a file called "setup.exe". If you double click that, you
may see an install/uninstall dialog appear. That should allow InstallShield
to run the uninstallation, as defined by Sonix/Microdia when they set up
their InstallShield package. An uninstaller is only as thorough, as the
people using the tools, so if an idiot set up the InstallShield, then
it may leave garbage all over the place.

You should have seen uninstallation options in other places, such as
just below the Amcap entry in your Start:programs entry for Amcap.

If you cannot find uninstallation options in the regular Windows places,
then find that {ECD03DA7-5952-406A-8156-5F0C93618D1F} directory and
use the "setup.exe" file inside. The options presented in the dialog
Window should be "Modify", "Repair", "Remove". Give the Remove a
try.

I notice as well, that installer sprinkled stuff in the C:\Windows
folder, which doesn't seem like such a good choice of a place for
such files. Hopefully, the uninstaller will sweep all that crap
out of there.

If that did not clean it up, you always have the option of reinstalling
it, to put the files back where they were, and trying the uninstallation
process again. If you've been manually deleting things, I can't predict
here, what InstallShield will think of that. But reinstalling would put
everything back, such that the uninstaller will get a chance to properly
remove it.
