Alps Pointing-device is preventing the machine from entering standby

I have bought a SONY VAIO PCG-TR2 notebook with winXP Home and upgraded it
to WinXP Professional. I think that that was still all-right (except the
camera not working - I worked that out). However, at some point (maybe after
installing some of other programs or updates) the standby and hibernate
stopped working with the following message:

"The device driver for the 'Alps Pointing-device' device is preventing the
machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again.
If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

I have tried to update the driver with several versions of that driver found
on the internet, uninstalling it, reinsalling it etc. and nothing helped. I
would really need this to work as I'm going to be travelling soon and can't
be shutting down the computer after every short use.

PLEASE HELP!!

Hi
Your current Hibernation File may be corrupt. To correct this, open you
Control Panel and select Power Options. Click on the Hibernate tab an
uncheck "Enable Hibernation", click apply and reboot (this will delete you
current Hibernation File). Now go back to Power Options and place a chec
next to "Enable Hibernation" and click apply, then reboot. This should cur
your Hibernation issue

MS-MVP Kelly Theriot has an excellent Hibernation Troubleshooting websit
that you may also wish to visit: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.ht

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your answer. Unfortunately the suggested didn't
help. Also I have already went through the suggested site when I was looking
for the solution to my problem before I posted it here. There is nothing too
similar to my problem... :(

Would you have any other tips?

Regards,

Marek

I think I might have discovered the cause of the problem. However I still
don't know how to fix it.

When I look at the properties of the Alps Pointing Device in Device Manager
it actually says in the 'Location' on 'General' tab that it is 'plugged into
PS/2 mouse port'. This doesn't seem right to me as it is an internal
touchpad. If anything I would expect it to say that it is plugged to USB.

I remeber having a similar problem with my desktop computer and I solved it
simply by swapping the PS/2 port connection for a USB one thanks to the MS
Natural keyboard's having both connectors available.

In this case I believe I'll have to reset this somewhere on the machine's
system, but I have no clue as to where and how. Any suggestions anybody?

Regards,

Marek

When you upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro did you go back to your original VAIO disks and install drivers (especially for the ALPS) from those disks
I had a SONY VAIO a couple of years ago and upgraded as you did with the same problem. I found many quirks but by installing the drivers from the original VAIO disks for some devices including the ALPS pointing device most problems (including the hibernating) went away
I think SONY modify quite a few drivers to get 3rd party devices working correctly with their hardware

On reflection I decided upgrading as I did was a bad idea

Hope it help

Thanks for your reply Rob.
I did try that before. However, the problem with this small VAIO is that it
doesn't come with any instalation disks. The user is supposed to create
recovery discs from the image on the harddrive. And there is yet another
problem with those... They don't contain normal instalation files, neither
standard packages, but they mostly contain SONY propriatory packages that
can be read only using the SONY recovery software. Unfortunately, this
software has no options to restore drivers... :( (only application or the
whole system - fresh clean install).

Thanks a lot for your try anyway.

I've had the very same error message with my external Cordless USB-mouse. I
noticed that the error message only occurred when running on batteries. I
disabled the "Allow this device to bring the computer out of
standby"-option. This sorted my problem and I can now enter and exit standby
both when running on A/C and on batteries.
