Almost all programs shutdown

Almost every program shuts down immediately when I try to start it with "____
has encountered a problem and has to shut down. Do you want to send a report?"
For some reason, Outlook Express seems to be fine, as does Mozilla Firefox.
IE works sporadically, but will shutdown also at times. McAfee doesn't work.
Nothing showed up in a recent scan by AsAware SE.

Try a System File Check. If you have a WinXP CD insert it in the
cdrom drive. Then go to Start>Run
type: sfc /scannow

Thanks for the reply. Did what you suggested and a box popped up that said
"Windows File Protection. Please wait while Windows verifies that all
protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions" It took
about 45 mins to complete, then the box went away, but nothing else happened.
Was I supposed to receive a log of the outcome somewhere?

Mr. Rich Barry rocks!!!.....your suggestion solved my problem. I'm happily
surfing with IE again, Mcafee works fine and all my programs start and run
successfully again. You fixed a problem that all other forums suggested could
be solved by running AdAware (which I had previously done a bunch of times
without success).
