All shared files "gone"

I went to my shared documents folder and all of the files were corrupted, 0
kb file size. 1270 pictures, my Money file all "gone". Any ideas of the
cause? Could it have been the latest update from Microsoft? I have all the
latest virus protection installed and I run Microsoft's removal tool monthly.

Impossible to tell the cause.

Unlikely but possible.
Could it have been...
Keep asking that question for any of the countless possibilities and the
answer is similar.

You may need to restore your data from your Back-ups.
