All of a sudden my screen fonts are shadowed...?

,As I was fiddling with XP tonight (see other posts here), suddenly the
screen blinked and when it returned, all of the screen fonts have a gray
shadow behind them. It's like a little gray cloud behind each word on the
screen that extends a little below each word on the screen. This "cloud" is
not an image in perspective (a 3-D image) of the letters on the screen. It is
a gray shadow.

How can I can back to where my screen was--no, shadows on the fonts?

Try turning Clear Type off :
Control Panel > Display Properties
Appearance tab > Effects
In "Use the following method to smooth screen fonts:", choose "Standard"
Click OK- OK
