Text Shadow Effect

I am creating a slide, I like have done hundreds of times before. I am using
PowerPoint 2003 on a Vista machine. I have a jpg file as a background and I
am using white fonts and I am trying to put black shadows behind them. After
I highlight my text then I go to the shadow button on the formatting bar and
it is grayed out, why? I have done shadowing in the past with no problem. I
was able to shadow a horizontal line on the same slide. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the great help I always get on this forum.

are you trying to use the text shadow. If it's a jpg use the shadow
formatting in the draw tool bar.

You know, I'd never noticed this before, but I think the difference is one
(that doesn't let you add a shadow) is a placeholder or "manual" textbox,
and the other (that allows the shadow on the drawing toolbar) is an
autoshape (rectangle, oval, etc.).
