All my Word documents are saving as .doc

My computer recently crashed but I fortunately had backed up all my files and
documents shortly before the event. When I reloaded the files, all of the
Word documents had their titles ending in .doc unlike their previous titles.
Also I noticed my saved Excel files end in .xls and assume that my Powerpoint
documents are ending in .ppt. I use Office Professional 2002 and don't
remember if I reloaded it or the documents first after the crash. Maybe that
had something to do with it. The extra endings on the document titles are
annoying--not a big deal but wanted to know what happened in the transition
that caused the change.

Those are the default file extensions for those files. I assume that
previously you were not displaying file extensions. This is a Windows
setting (Tools | Folder Options | View: Hide file extensions for known file
types in Windows Explorer).

It is strongly recommended, however, that you display file extensions, as
this makes it much less likely that you will be tricked by a malicious
attachment. For example, I just got an email purporting to be a notice of an
e-postcard from "a family member." The link in the email, which displayed an
address at www.postcards.com (or something like that), when moused over,
displayed a filename ending in gif.exe. If I hadn't had file extensions
displayed, I might have been fooled by the "GIF."
