All files are missing - Computer back to default set-up mode

When stating my computer running Windows XP Home Edition, my profile icon
appeared as normal, however, after clicking on it, the computer showed all
default applications and icons on the desktop. I asked a few people about
this, and it was suggested that the machine has a corrupt profile, which
means I am unable to see any of my files. Any suggestions as to how to
correct this?

Look in C:\Documents and Settings\ and see if you have two profiles under
your username...

(Two directories - similar names)

Then we can determine better if the corrupt profile is actually the issue
you are seeing. Usually - that is preceded with an error message and you
mentioned no such thing.
