Here is the setup: toshiba laptop with XP Home OEM installation. Problems
with the wirleless interent connectiion so i removed the the D-Link pc card.
The laptop then spontaneosuly rebooted but hung up. Booting in safe mode it
stopped loading at agp440.sys. None of the recommended fixes worked; i.e.,
disconnecting all usb devices; had no disk fron Toshiba to use the recovery
console; tried to boot from an XP Pro cd but could not get by the
administrator password. Do not want to reformat if possible since there is
much data on the hard drive.

put the card back in. boot into F8 Safe mode.
run system restore which will rollback computer a min of 1 day and max 30
days.
then you can have another stab at the wireless connection,

Boot into Safe mode. then
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools>system restore

this is NOT a total restore of system. just sets back (in time) the
computer to whatever day you choose.

into safe mode...hangs at agp440.sys

how about safe mode w/command prompt only?

or "Enable VGA Mode"?

or Last known good configuration?

did you pull out the d link card while the computer was still on?
you say it immediately rebooted!!

I think the Windows "Recovery Console is only available whit Win XP CD. and
Not available thru Toshiba recovery cds!!
And I wouldn't use a Win CD on OEM computer unless doing a complete/clean
install. not easy with laptops as they need special drivers for video etc.

Why and where are Toshiba CDs?
had no disk fron Toshiba.

reforamt the hard drive with an original factroy image

I'd say you have been playing with fire and finally got burnt.
Have you ever checked to see if cards are hot removable?
only thing I know of is some usb!!

Obtain and put laptop HDD in an external enclosure and connect to another
computer. copy what yuo can to its HDD or removable media.
return laptop HDD to laptop and use toshiba restore cd on HDD.

Dixon, I am having the same problem as 'ag' but all that happened with me is
the computer was unpluged. when I restarted it, it told me that the it
shutdown improperly...So I tried to start "normaly". Just like ag, hung up,
then in safe mode and again hung up on AGP440.sys. Is there anyway to
override it and disable agp440? I just like ag only have the OEM HP recovery
disk, not an XP CD-ROM.
there is a work around (Q324764) but again it requires an XP CD-ROM. I made
a XP boot disk floppy, but that does not work because it hangs on the Damn
AGP440.sys
So now what
