XP Pro bootup error

I have a latpop runnin XP Pro SP1, that I have been tasked with fixing. The
laptop was failing on bootup, displaying that ntoskrnl.exe was missing or
corrupt.
I have rebooted the laptop into the recovery console, and copied over the
ntoskrnl.exe from the XP Pro CD to C:\windows\system32 and then attempted to
reboot. The laptop now gets as far as displaying the Windows XP logo, before
the screen goes blank and nothing appears to happen. I have tried to boot the
machine in Safe Mode, but only get as far as the agp440.sys file being
displayed - at which point the laptop hangs.

I have since then copied over both the NTDLR and NTDETECT.COM from the XP
PRO CD, but this has not solved the problem.
Any ideas on how to fix?

This may indicate that there is a problem with this driver. Try
booting to the Safe Mode with Command Line. If this works, see "How to
Start System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt in Windows XP"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304449) for about how to go on.
Else reinstall Windows: "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade
(Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
