Won't boot to Safe Mode

WinXP Pro won't boot all the way to Safe Mode. The process begins, but then
hangs up at the same point each attempt. It is at the step of loading
Drivers\agp440.sys.
What can I do? I need to get to Safe Mode as Administrator to try and reset
a password my son has fogotten!
Thanks

How long are you waiting?

You can log in as administrator without going into safe mode - just press
Ctrl+Alt+Del twice when you get to the welcome screen, and enter the
administrator name & password. (or, if your user account has admin rights,
you can just log in as yourself).

Also check out your event logs to see why you can't boot into safe mode,
presuming you're really waiting long enough.

FWIW, I believe I'd had some boot failures that appeared to terminate
after displaying that particular file name, yet the problem had nothing
to do with this file. I wouldn't dwell on it too much. No, sorry, I
don't remember what the problem actually was.

It's not that file that's the problem. It's just the last entry
displayed before the problem happens. Here are some links that discuss
this problem.

Look at the second one for Virtual PC Guy's web log, but there are
others there too.

Also lots of hits on Google groups search:
