After SP2 PC locks up during boot ??

As the subject line says, as soon as you get the scrolling blue dots they
don't even make across once, it just stops about 2 thirds of the way across
on the first pass and thats it. Safe mode does exactly the same except as it
loads as soon as you get the scrolling driver list it stops as soon as
agp440.sys appears. OK so I should have done a backup first, anyway it was
long over due for a reinstall so I do a fresh install on another disk just
so I can see the contents of my old C drive and remove what I need, I then
format the first partion on my original disk and reinstall that, copy
accross what I need and before I install anything else (apart from Norton
Ghost) I do an image of the disk and try SP2 again and guess what, exactly
the bloody same, OK so I can now put thngs back the way they were but whats
up with SP2, is anyone else suffering the same problem and if so have you
fixed it and how.

Thanks

Dave.

Dave,

Yes, I'm having the same problem too. I did a clean install with Windows XP
Pro and tried to install SP2 next without installing any other software or
any previous updates and this is what I've found. If you can start in safe
mode go to device manager and expand the Network Adapters. You'll probably
find about 6 extra adapters listed. I don't know why SP2 creates all of the
extra adapters or how to remove them. But I believe that is what's causing
Windows to lockup. I've removed every device from my computer except the
bare minimum such as the keyboard, mouse, and monitor and did another
install. Windows after a clean install worked just fine after I installed
SP2. However, after I enabled my network adapter (Realtek RTL8139) it
lockup again. Thinking SP2 didn't care for my built in networking card I
disabled it and installed another one. Then I did another clean install of
both Windows and SP2. After turning the computer off and then back on; it
would not boot normally. Looking at the Network Adapters in Device Manager
I found the same problem. Windows had installed the extra adapters just as
before. So, I'm stumped. However I've done a clean install on an HP 6642F
running at 550MHz with 128MB memory and a box with a GA-5AX motherboard
with an AMD-K6-2 processor running at 500MHz and 128MB of memory with no
problems at all. So I'm stumped.
