After shutdown modem and router ethernet remain open....

Hi everyone,

I got 2 computers, 1 router, 1 modem, (wired connection) all connected and
up running... But here's where things differ. When I turn off both computers,
my XP computer ethernet connection and router light remain on. But, on my
Windows 98 computer the router light for it's ethernet cable turns off. It's
like it has an open connection running that needs to be turned off on the XP.

For example... sometimes I left my msn messenger service on and turned off
the computer... i'd have 3 lights on the modem... i'd have to turn on the
computer and turn off the msn service and then shut down the computer again.
Then I would only have 2 lights instead of 3 showing on the modem... before
adding the router and extra computer... I also noticed it only did it thru
the ethernet connection and not the USB connection to the modem. Modem is
dual connection... router of course is only ethernet connections only. So
hooking it up that way is out...

So where do I start to look for something that should be off but remains
active even when the computers turned off. And can my computer be accessed
because the lines are open? Is it safe to leave it this way? The Modem has a
Power light and ready light that remain on at all times... and the light that
turns off if computer is turned off for either USB or Ethernet cable is
remaining on. The router has a power light, internet light that remain on and
2 lights for the 2 ports which are active when computers are on... but 1
remains on for XP when both computers are off. Understand... I hope so... LOL

I had a modem that went bad and locked up my phone lines for a week... Never
checked the computer because it was turned off and with the phone down I
didn't need to get on it.. I never thought my modem would be active even when
computer was off and cause me so much trouble. That's why I'm concerned, I
have DSL and it's always on, don't need anyone accessing my computer even
when it's off or in my case appears off but not. Thanks...

I had the same thing happening on my network, so being a little paranoid, I
now turn off the PC's, then turn off the surge protectors that everything is
plugged into (router, modem, peripherals, etc) for the night. That way I
know that no one is going to remotely power up one of my PC's and wreak
havoc. In the morning, turning on the surge protectors lets the router and
the modem power up and then I turn on the PC's. I keep the "Show icon in
notification area when connected box" checked on my network settings so I
can right click it for a repair if it needs it to get back online after the
power-up.

ok let me ask you this? Yesterday I downloaded a program online and ran it.
The program messed up my IP address so I couldn't get online. My ISP had a
heck of a time getting me back online almost 4 hours it took... What I
thought happened was I tried to add third computer and messed it up.... to my
surprise I opened the program I downloaded after the fix and spent another 4
hours on the phone fixing it again because it changed my IP ADDRESS
again...LOL Will turning off my modem and router cause my isp addresses to
change all over again? Because my router hangs onto the old number and won't
renew or release itself and ISP won't give me but one ISP address and they
make me do 1000'sof things before they give me one to put in using a MAC
CLONE. I don't won't to go thru all that again.... on two different computers
at the same time... and guess what I never got the 3 rd one connected LOL
because I afraid to unplug any cables LOL

Hmm, I never have that kind of problem. Do you have cable or DSL? I have
Charter Cable and everything is pretty much plug and play. I have a Linksys
8 port router (four desktops and two laptops) and a Linksys Modem. The only
problem I ever have getting online is solved by the "repair" that I
described, using the taskbar icon (I can also do the same by going to
Start--Network Connections, and right clicking on the Local Area Connection.
That gives me the option to "repair" and everything is back online. The
only time I had to use tech support was when we first had our cable internet
installed and it was determined that we needed a dedicated cable line for
the internet because we have five televisions and they were sucking a little
too much juice. Never had a problem since.

Your computers are operating correctly -- Windows XP does not shut every
device down during power off ("Some devices must stay on" from microsoft
help) - I believe that this has to do with power management when used with
an ACPI BIOS. IF you want the lights to go off - hibernate the XP Computer
and the LAN will power down turning off the light on the HUB
