Advanced Server or Standard Server

Howdy all.

I've decided to update my home network from NT4 server(sp6a) to
Win2K...though not sure if I should get the stnd server or opt for adv
server. Also, to access network from outside, what would I need - a
static IP - so I can connect remotely?

Just wife and I plus occassional house guest needing access to internet
- wirelessly - and access to network files when researching our startup
business (self service dog wash). Network used for programming(Paradox,
VB, .Net, ASP, sql server) in support of my job. Maybe also install
exchange - some ver - to learn this and maybe use it for inhouse email.


After some reading, my gut says to go with the stnd server as adv
server provides features that might not be useful in a home networking
evironment. Since I have a new box will just install to that and create
new users & groups vice upgrading the NT4 box (AMD 233). This I can
reformat and maybe use for the Exchange Svr or donate it.

Also, presume that win2k adv or stnd server can accept larger drives,
i.e. 30 - 80gigs and more while NT needed SP4 to do so.

Forgot to add if I should also install/use active directory? Have not
read up on this yet will.

I would not worry about Active Directory unless:

You envision your network growing (more and more users) over the next year
or so.

You want to learn AD.

.... You also don't need a static IP, you can use a "free" dynamic dns
service like www.dyndns.com or my new favorite, www.no-ip.com, which
supports my D-Link router.

They have many useful tips and setup guides, like how to setup a VPN etc...
