Help Needed - Server Failed, need to recover data

Hi,

My Win2k Adv Server fell over yesterday and refuses to boot into Windws.
I've tried all the recovery stuff but it looks like something has gone screwy
in the registry and its not wanting to play ball. I am, however, able to see
and access the drive contents if I put the drive into another PC, so.....

I'm going to rebuild a new hard drive with Win 2K Adv Server. My question
is :-

1. How do I recover the user accounts and information from the busted drive?
2. How do I recover my Exchange 2000 email and account data?

TIA

Are you saying that this is a Domain Cotroller? If it is, is it the only
one? If it is, and you haven't backed up the System State, I think you are
SOL. If there are other DC's, then you should be able to seize any FSMOs
that were on the failed DC to another DC. If you are going to set up the
machine with the same name, then be sure that you remove the failed DC from
the domain and AD before you set up the new machine and DCPROMO it.

Do you have a backup of the Exchange databases? It will make your life
easier.... Take a look at

Thanks Hank. Looks like I'll be re-creating the user accounts then as the
last backup seems to have been sometime ago. Luckily for me, there's not a
lot of people. I have managed to recover the MTADATA and MTBDATA
directories, so now I've got to try and establish how to recover the data out
of them by recreating the message store. I'm a little out of my depth though
and I'm concerned about how to marry-up the Exchange data store with the
newly re-created user accounts. Any thoughts ? (I'll go read the MS article
now)

Hi Hank,

The article was very useful......in telling me that I'm screwed if I didn't
have a proper backup!! The point is that my drive is not destroyed. I can
access it and retrive any files I need. The problem is, which files do I
need to recover and how do I go about integrating their contents into the new
Exchange server I'm building. Is there someway of rebuilding the data store
from the MTA/MTBDATA directories?

You can access priv1.edb and priv1.stm?
