Unable to access files created under Win 2000 Adv. Server

Recently I replaced the operating system on my PC from a
demo version of Windows 2000 Advanced server to Windows XP
professional. While the Windows 2000 Adv. Server was
installed, I created several folders in a partition
separate from the OS and created some MS Word and Excel
documents which, I stored in the above stated folders.
These were not just test documents but real files that I
need for my personal records. Unfortunately it didn't
occur to me when I removed the Win 2000 Adv. server that I
wouldn't be able to get to into the folders or files with
the Win XP OS. Does anybody have a suggestion on how I
can recover these files? I tried to reinstall the Win
2000 Adv in the partition that contained the files. My
thought was that I could go in under the administrator ID
and take ownership of all the folders and files and be
able to get at it that way but I was unsuccessful. When I
tried, it appeared to grant all of the rights I needed to
recover the files but when I tried to move or open a file,
I received an Access Denied message. Does somebody have a
suggestion on how I can get these files back?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

After taking ownership I can go into the rights of any
file or folder and grant the Administrator ID any rights I
want. But when I try to open the file, I get an Access
Denied error message. I also noticed that when I click on
the Advanced button off of the General tab in the
properties of a file, the Ecrypt contents to secure data
box is checked. I did not check that when I created the
file. I don't know how that box got checked.
