ADSL internet sharing problem

trevor Smith

hi all,

i have a major problem with internet sharing on my XP network.

firstly i will explain what i have, ADSL via a BT line connection to PC A
via the ethernet card. this ADSL modem/router has given that NIC card the IP
192.168.1.4.

i also have a Wireless USB LAN card which is connected to PC B upstairs. the
USB lan card has got ip 192.168.0.1 due to in part ICS. PC B upstairs has IP
set by DHCP so its in the 192.168.0.xxx scale at the moment 192.168.0.165.

both PCs can share files and see each other in MSHOME workgroup. i have
enabled ICS on the ADSL NIC to which is warned me it needed to change the IP
from 192.164.1.4 (which the modem has given to the NIC) to 192.168.0.1, it
obviuosly could not do this and instead it set the IP of the wireless card
to 192.168.0.1 and the network icon for the ADSL showed as "shared". great i
thought, i went upstairs and ran the network wizard on PC B and it still
failed to load up the internet.

i have got the internet gateway icon and can play in the settings but have
never had to do this in the past. strangely when i click internet explorer
it fails to open a page even after trying and actually looking like it
might. i ran cmd dos prompt and pinged www.yahoo.co.uk which works and
returns time of 35ms for each 4 attempts. so it seems there is something
blocking the actual web browsing/e-mail/etc but allowing it via pinging.

i have disabled all firewalls on both pc's, i have tried bridging both the
ADSL and wireless on PC A to no affect.

i can however make ICS work if i use Avirt soho 4.3, however the speed of
web browsing on PC B upstairs is 25kb/sec max whereas PC A has speeds of
230kb/sec down. now i could not find in soho if there was a limiter. and i
know the wireless network speeds are good as i can transfers files very
quickly.

however i would like to make windows ICS work for hope that the speed will
be full on both connections dependant on use.

i'm sorry this was a long explanation but i hope anyone can help me

IME Windows ICS is crap because it's difficult/impossible to
configure for some scenarios. I used to run a free version of
WinRoute but that's old and no longer available. A quick Google
suggests it might be worth investigating iNet Shaper - there's a free
version available and it seems to do what you need.

Hi Trevor - you need to do some manual configuration to get around this
problem. As you have said you need to share the ethernet adapter to ADSL and
it needs to have an IP of 192.168.0.1. (There doesnt seem to be any
alternative to this as far as my research could find - the shared adapter
must have an IP of 192.168.0.1 or it will fall over). Therefore you must
change the default IP of the router to something else in the 192.168.0.?
range (e.g.192.168.0.2), then manually set the IP of the ethernet adapter to
192.168.0.1 or let the wizard do it for you. Now PCA should be able to
connect to the router without problems and the adapter is shared via the
wireless adapter to PCB. The wireless USB's IP and PCB's IP should be in the
same IP range as each other also (but not necessarily in the 192.168.0.?
range).

hi

i dont suppose you know how to configure the Voyager 205 adsl modem/router
for that. whenever i try to change its internal IP to 192.168.0.xxx it fails
to open and the net turns off and i need to use the reset key on the back of
the modem

Hi. My comments are in-line with your message.
i have a major problem with internet sharing on my XP network.

firstly i will explain what i have, ADSL via a BT line connection to PC A
via the ethernet card. this ADSL modem/router has given that NIC card the IP
192.168.1.4.

OK. What's the make and model number of the ADSL modem/router? Does
it have a wireless capability built in? How many LAN Ethernet ports
does it have?

If it's truly a router, you don't have to use ICS at all:

1. If it has a wireless capability built in, you can connect PC A to
the modem/router with a wire and connect PC B wirelessly.

2. If it doesn't have a wireless capability built in, you can use its
routing capability to give Internet access to both computers by
connecting it to a wireless router or wireless access point.
i also have a Wireless USB LAN card which is connected to PC B upstairs. the
USB lan card has got ip 192.168.0.1 due to in part ICS. PC B upstairs has IP
set by DHCP so its in the 192.168.0.xxx scale at the moment 192.168.0.165.

That looks OK. ICS always assigns 192.168.0.1 to the host computer's
home network (LAN) connection.
both PCs can share files and see each other in MSHOME workgroup. i have
enabled ICS on the ADSL NIC to which is warned me it needed to change the IP
from 192.164.1.4 (which the modem has given to the NIC) to 192.168.0.1, it
obviuosly could not do this and instead it set the IP of the wireless card to
192.168.0.1 and the network icon for the ADSL showed as "shared".

That's exactly what it should do. The warning told you that it would
change the home network (wireless card) IP address to 192.168.0.1. It
didn't tell you that it would change the IP address of the shared
connection (ADSL NIC).
great i thought, i went upstairs and ran the network wizard on PC B
and it still failed to load up the internet.

Run the Wizard again on PC B. If it detects the shared Internet
connection, tell it to use that connection. Otherwise, tell it that
the computer connects to the Internet through another computer on the
network.
i have got the internet gateway icon and can play in the settings but have
never had to do this in the past. strangely when i click internet explorer
it fails to open a page even after trying and actually looking like it
might. i ran cmd dos prompt and pinged www.yahoo.co.uk which works and
returns time of 35ms for each 4 attempts. so it seems there is something
blocking the actual web browsing/e-mail/etc but allowing it via pinging.

Run Internet Explorer on PC B. Click Tools | Internet Options |
Connections | LAN Settings and clear all of the boxes on that screen.
i have disabled all firewalls on both pc's, i have tried bridging both the
ADSL and wireless on PC A to no affect.

What firewall does PC A have? Some firewalls are incompatible with
ICS and must be un-installed, not just disabled.
i can however make ICS work if i use Avirt soho 4.3, however the speed of
web browsing on PC B upstairs is 25kb/sec max whereas PC A has speeds of

This is not correct. The shared network connection (Ethernet adapter
on PC A) must not have an address in the 192.168.0.x range. The
192.168.1.x address that it's getting from the ADSL modem/router is
fine.

It's the home network connection (wireless adapter on PC A) that ICS
automatically sets to 192.168.0.1. As you note, Peter, ICS doesn't
support changing that address.

I've written a web site with details:

it does detect an internet connection called "Trev" my dads pc name
PC B wireless NIC also has an IP assigned by DHCP from PC A's wireless NIC
Run Internet Explorer on PC B. Click Tools | Internet Options |

this didn't help, it only made it timeout quicker
What firewall does PC A have? Some firewalls are incompatible with

it only has Windows XP firewall, the host pc did have norton system works
2005 which as far as i can tell doesn't have a built in firewall

after all this the client PC B can still only ping www.yahoo.co.uk but not
actually load it via IE and sharing files over the LAN still works, it just
seems ICS is just out of my reach,

thank you for you ongoing help

You're welcome. What happens if you try to access google.com by name
and by IP address on PC B? Click these links:

http://google.com
http://216.239.39.99

This could be an MTU problem. Find the right MTU setting on PC B, as
shown here, using the router's LAN IP address (which is something in
the 192.168.1.x range) in the "ping" command:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

Then make the setting manually on PC B, or use DrTCP to make it:

Let's double-check: you ran the ping tests on PC B (the client), set
the new MTU value on the right network interface on PC B, and rebooted
PC B before trying IE again, right.

If so, the only other things I can think of are to un-install and
re-install the wireless network adapter on each computer, updating it
to the latest driver program from the manufacturer's web site.

A solution might be to connect a wireless router to the ADSL
modem/router and stop using ICS. However, you said that's not
possible at this time.

Perhaps someone in the Internet Explorer news group can think of
something else.

on PC B i opened cmd and typed ping -f -l 1500 192.168.1.3 (the NIC
connected to the ADSL modem)

it brought a error till i reached ping -f -l 1426 192.168.1.3 when it then
returned results of 11ms ish

i added this via the regedit and also restarted, when this failed i removed
my MTU entry and entered it via drtcp still no effect after restarting
If so, the only other things I can think of are to un-install and
re-install the wireless network adapter on each computer, updating it
to the latest driver program from the manufacturer's web site.

the zydas site has no new driver but windows update identified the driver as
an MSI usb lan, so i installed that program on both pcs and new drivers and
still the same error.

one thing i did notice was when in network connections and clicking status
of the 'internet connection' which is listed as connected, i clicked
settings and there are NO services in there at all. i just wondered if that
could be a problem?

it just seems that browsing on PC B through ICS is just out of reach, the
internet icon and wireless lan icons on PC B upstairs sit there flashing and
the packets show it is sending and receiving, i just do not get why internet
explorer will not connect at all. it seems something is blocking it from
doing that, strange though as when i use Avirt soho 4.3 it works but PC B
only gets a speed of 30kb/sec max when we have 2mb ADSL, you can probably
see my frustration and not wanting to accepting ICS just doesn't want to
work when all i see that it should

could you suggest any tcp/ip settings that might be on PC B wireless lan
card that might make ICS not work, dns or wins or other settings that should
be enabled or disabled?

thank you again for your replies

Hi Trevor, sorry for the wrong info earlier. I dont have any further
suggestions except to remove your network and wireless cards and put them
into different slots, allow them to be redetected and try again with a clean
slate.
