ADSL connection needs restart after non-use

My ADSL connection normally works correctly, but if I don't use the
internet for a few hours and then try it again, neither my browser
(Firefox 1.5.04), my email prog (Eudora) nor my usenet reader (Free
Agent) can find my connection.

If I restart my computer, all of the above work correctly. It seems
that Windows 'forgets' where the internet is. Is there a way to make
Windows remember without doing a restart?

Is there not a reset btn on your modem? or maybe by powering off then on the
modem.
If its a usb type they apparently can give probs, perhaps it also has an
ethernet connection.

The modem is a Siemens Speedstream 4200 which has USB and ethernet
connections. I only use the ethernet one.

I have set my PC to go to System Standby after 2 hours of non-use -
is it possible that this causes it to forget the connection?

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked and it isn't set to shut down. I
am wondering if my former system power option of going to standby
after 2 hours was the problem, so I have changed it to standby after 5
hours and will see if this solves the problem.
