Microsoft has an 18-step process for overcoming this error here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321445

Of course it's for a completely different product on a different operating
system, but...

Delete the earlier version using the Control Panel's Add/Remove programs
option. Then download the complete and most recent version of Adobe Reader
as a 'file' to a folder on your hard disk. Then do the install using this
file.

For OP's convenience:

Hi there,
I have the same problem as you but as my version 7 is corrupt, I cannot
delete it or upgrade it. I waiting for Adobe to get back to me but I'm
thinking that I might go with the Foxit software that was suggested, as I'm
fed-up with this issue.
Tried looking for version 7 to do a re-install but can't find it, so I'm
stuck.
Foxit is looking better and better!

Hi Dave,
I eventually downloaded the windows Install Cleanup utility, and am going to
use that to completely remove the old version 7 and then due a clean install
of 8.
Although I might also download the Foxit Reader as well just in case Adobe
Reader goes wrong again.

I defnitely prefer Foxit Reader. But once in a while, I do need Adobe
Reader.

I would recommend using Foxit as your default PDF reader.

Thanks Daave, I think I will.....
