For the first time ever, Adobe Acrobat 6 is freezing my computer, it is so
bad, I can't do a cntrl alt del. How can I force a stop of the program when
I can't do the 3 finger thing? Now I need to turn of the darn computer.
Isn't there a program like chkdsk I need to run after I turn off the
computer like that? I'm using Win xp home with SP2...Peter

Peter:
God, I hate PDF format. So piggy. Acrobat 6 loads a TON of plugins for
additional functionallity that do not need to be loaded at startup. To
greatly increase the load time of PDF based web pages, do the following:

1.Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace C if you
installed on another drive, like D or E).
2.Move all files from the “plug_ins†folder to the “Optional†folder.
3.You're done.

AcroRead seems to be VERY picky about video
card drivers.

Try turning down hardware acceleration a notch
and then run it again.

If it works, bitch to Adobe, as lobotomizing
your video card just to get crappy software to run
is NOT a legitimate solution.

If you're using Acrobat Reader 7, it has a startup services, so if you run
Acrobat Reader, faster than Acrobat Reader 6.

FWIW: I recently tried to download some IRS forms in PDF format and my
computer froze every time I tried. Had to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out. I
went to Adobe and saw there was a Version 7. I checked mine in
Add/Remove programs and realized I had version 6. I removed it and
downloaded V-7 and it worked fine.

I too had problems with V6 - installed V7 and no more problems

Geoff,

I decided to do what you suggested and it did load the v7 Reader faster
BUT it killed the browser integration.

Tried the detect and repair, no dice, had to uninstall and reinstall all
over again so that it would work with the browsers.

So you know which plugin controls that activity? Maybe I could leave
that one in the plug_ins folder.
