Administrative Tools Services

My backup would not work. I found "Default settings for services" on the
Windows XP website at
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../en-us/sys_srv_default_settings.mspx?mfr=true.
I set my settings according to the list and I have found several missing
services, for example, Internet Connection Sharing, Remote Registry, Smart
Card Helper, Telnet, UaPnP Device Host, Upload Manager, and Utility Manager -
all gone! Then I found some services that are not on the list. Some I know
what they are and where they came from. Others, I have no clue but at least
one of them was stopping my backup from starting. Here is the ones I have no
clue about: IPv6 Helper Service, ASP.NET State Service, .NET Runtime
Optimization Service v2.0.50727_x86, HTTP SSL, InstallDriver Table Manager,
iPodService, RIP Listener, Server, Machine Debug Manager, Peer Networking
Group Authentication, Peer Networking Identity Manager, Peer Networking, Peer
Name Resolution Protocol, Cyberlink RichVideo Service (CRVS), Remote Packet
Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental), Simple TCP/IP Services, SNMP Service,
SNMP Trap Service, Universal Plug and Play Device Host, Windows Defender
Service, Windows Media Connect Service, and Network Provisioning Service. My
backup is working now that I set everything back to the default settings but
I don't know which ones to remove or how to remove them. The only new ones I
recently installed were all Microsoft Stuff like Windows Defender Service,
Windows Media Connect Service, etc. I am afraid that if I disable them all,
which I did, that some things are not going to work right or my system is
going to be vunerable. I am equally afraid that if I do enable them that they
could be a virus and wipe out my system restore and backup like they did
before. Can you give me advise on what to do with each one, for example, dig
this and enable that, etc. I am running Windows SP Home Edition SP2 on a 1.6
GB machine (home made)

The Services applet has a Description entry for each service, and if you rt
click a service and select properties it shows the dependancies.
Their is also an entry which shows whether its started, properties also show
the type of startup

Since your backup is now working, and I guess you dont know what services
settings you amended, you might want to leave them alone

Or if you google for each 'name' you will get the info
Services may also be started when you install an app, eg Ipod, if you then
disable them the app may not function
http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html also has a list

How do I replace the missing ones? I tried searching on the Microsoft
Download page to no avail? Also, now if I click on a link in my email, it
will not open it in my IE. What service controls that? I have tried starting
each service and checking to see if that fixed the problem or not but it got
me no where and there are some services that will not start at all.

This list is pre SP2 and outdated.
Service Pack 2 modified many services and added others.
For example, Messenger was disabled by SP2 (so were other services) for
security reasons. On this list Messenger shows as Automatic.
Additionnally, the services.msc help file does not reflect SP2 changes.
Unfortunately Microsoft did not update the help file. Perhaps they will in a
future update ;-)

I have compiled a list of default services pre and post SP2 for both Home
and Pro editions in excel as tested on my machine.

E-mail me directly at (e-mail address removed) and I can mail you
the file. If you don't have excel installed, a reader is available from
Microsoft.

It does not work set to manual but it does work set to automatic after I
change all the other services which then causes other programs to stop
functioning like when I click a link in my Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Outlook Express it will not open a window.
