Disabled is the default for Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2.

You may not have any peripherals that require this service. If one of yours
magically does not function anymore, set it to automatic. Namely, scanners
with function buttons (fax, copy) or even an "Internet" keyboard with volume
or play controls.

Default XP Home: Disabled
Default XP Pro: Disabled
Safe Setting: Disabled

Service name (registry): HidServ

Service Name: Hidserv

Executable Name: svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Installed through: Default operating system installation
Startup type: Disabled
Service status: Stopped
Question 2: Should I be able to manually start this service??

There may be something that you have to install in Add/Remove windows
Components, but I can't figure out what.

hidserv.dll = HID Audio Service

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\HidServ\Parameters
Says: ServiceDll is %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll

I set Human Interface Device Access service to Manual and tried to start it.
Got this message.

OK

No kidding. hidserv.dll does not exist in %SystemRoot%\System32

There should be a hidserv.dll in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache

Note if getting the error below when starting the service, then one has to
open the archive <install-cd>\i368\Drivers.cab and extract the following
files to %SystemRoot%\System32:
hidserv.dll
mouhid.sys
mouclass.sys

Event ID: 7023
Could not start the Human Interface Device Access service on Local Computer.

I have a hidserv.dll in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache
I have a mouhid.sys in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache
I have a mouclass.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

All three can be copied to %SystemRoot%\System32

I did not try it, because I do not need the service for anything.

**Thank you Kindly, I do have a Logiteh optical usb mouse, however obviously
it doesn't require the support of this service, and now I think I
understand, I just don't have a device that meets the requirement or need.
See below (**). I don't have the Logitech s/w installed for my optical usb
hid mouse, it's truly plug & play.

** Yes, and the device would have s/w and the s/w installation would no
doubt enable the service, Windows would have the knowledge and needed files.
