admin logon problem

R

Rob

I did something rather stupid today and wondering if there
is a fix. Hopefully one that will let me gain access
again to my files.

My home computer was until today setup with only one local
admin account, no logon required....just boot and use.
Fine right? Well it was until I thought I could get
smart. I added a password to this account which was
fine. But then I changed the name. In doing this I
somehow created a new admin account and no longer had
access to my files under the old default. As of now I
have only one admin account listed and with this account I
do not have access to my files under C:/documents and
settings/administrator. Which is where all my files ae
stored.

I hope someone can help.

Thank YOU!

If you have XP Pro on your computer, at the log in screen type
ctrl-alt-delete
twice. In the user account type administrator, leave the password blank and
press enter. You likely didn't create a password for this hidden account
during setup and if the computer was purchased with XP pre-installed it
doesn't likely have one either,

If you have Home, boot into Safe Mode (F8 after the post test and before
Windows starts. Once Windows starts loading, you've missed it and will have
to try again). You'll have an option to log on as Administrator. Again,
the same procedure, you'll be asked to log in to get into safe mode, type
administrator, leave the password blank and press enter.

This will get you in. Then, open Explorer and copy your files from your old
user account to the new one.

With XP Pro, if I logon as you mentioned is it then
possible to delete the new admin account I setup and use
the hidden account from then on? Your correct, I didn't
setup a password during setup.

You should only use the hidden account for things such as this and other
emergencies. For everything else that would require an administrator, you
should continue to use the admin account you create.
