security prob denied acess to admin

I have a crappy compaq laptop that frequently locks up to the point where i
have to hold down the power button and restart. This happened to me earlier
today and when i restarted and tried to log in, windows put up a message
saying that there was some security problem and that my admin account access
could not be granted. (it only gave me 20 sec to read it). it then logged me
in under a "temporary" account and started installing programs that already
existed under admin. it said any changes i made would not be saved. it seems
like i can get to all of my saved files, but i'm not sure what all this
implies and i'd like to get things back to normal (as all of my settings have
been reset).

ok, i logged in again and copied what the text box said at startup:

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - Invalid access to memory location.

What version of windows? Also, can you start in safe mode, and if so, do you
have access to system restore? Perhaps worth a try.
