adequate protection

Currently using AVG free (but the few updates is causing me concern)
and the free ZA. Is this adequate protection or would I be better
advised to pay for something like Norton Internet Security?

Any free software, however good initially, may leave you exposed to the whim
and good will of the developer -

In these time of high virus activity I would personally recommend you use
something like Norton or McAffee or others.

AVG is good, but the default it is to get updates every 14 days, which is
way too long. And it seems that they aren't as quick about posting updates
as some of the others, so you might be exposed if there's a new virus out
and you're vulnerable for some reason. And on occasion, the updates just
quit. I've had to re-load it on occasion to jump-start it again.

I just install Norton 2004 and the default is to check for updates every 4
hours.

I use AVG on computers that seldom go on the Internet and don't have email
or aren't critical to be operational. I have Norton on a test computer that
sees other people's hard drives, on my "critical" machine that would be a
pain to reload if it went down, and on computers that spend time on the
Internet or have regular email access.

I been using Norton Internet Security 2003 for months and haven't had
problems. (knock on wood) Never used the free programs, so I can't comment
on them.

While Purplehaz is correct in stating that Nortons system
works is not the best he is entirely incorrect in
including Norton Anti-Virus in this statement. I don't use
any Symantec tools as they are mostly garbage but I do use
and have always used and will continue to use Norton Anti-
Virus. It is one of the top scanners on the market and is
kept up to date weekly with an effectiveness level that
rates it as one of the top three in the world. The AVG
free virus protection utility is garbage and easily
compromised. Test it yourself and any independent site you
want and you will see that it is easily compromised. Keep
smiling.

James. I dropped AVG because of the delayed updates. Try the free
Anti-Vir-Personal Edition.....
http://www.free-av.com/ You have to click on the icon in the system tray
to get the updates, but they have one almost daily. I find it very
effective and unobtrusive.
And I switched from ZA which was way to invasive (Go to their site and see
the 17 pages you need to uninstall it!) I like the free Kerio-Personal
Firewall a lot, www.kerio.com Regards. Dean

I consider it adequate for most people, and much less likely to cause
trouble than N I S. Or you could consider the Kapersky Lite version
AV, used with ZA

You can very easily set it to check for updates more often. Normally
they allow them to accumulate for ten days or so, but they are pretty
good at getting out a fix for major new viruses if they appear
