free software... is it true?

After seeing all the disruption caused by MS Blaster and SoBig, I'm
wondering about the reliability and efficacy of free software programs
like Zone Alarm (free version) and AVG (free version). Is it true...
that you get what you pay for? Or will these two programs do an
adequate job in keeping our computers reasonably secure? I'm willing
to part with a few dollars and install McAfee or Norton but I also
know that many knowledgeable persons posting here have said that both
programs are resource hogs... both programs work their ways deeply
into the registry making it nigh to impossible to make a clean
uninstall and both do not really provide any better protection in the
long run. Comments?

Norton is fine. it's blocked a series of viruses for me lately. the fact
that's it's deep in my registry is great, i'm not uninstalling it anyway.
the fact that it's a resource hog... well, i've only got 256 RAM on here and
i'm running fine with a 1.4Ghz processor. no lag.

Hi

I use both ZoneAlarm and AVG - without any problems - no viruses/worms I can't comment on either McAfee or Norton products as I don't use them.

I run Norton's Internet Security which includes a Firewall, Antivirus,
Parental Controls, Spam Control, and more [you do not have to install things
you cannot use or have need for]. They do a great job if you keep them
updated. Most people who get viruses, worms, bugs, etc, either do not have
Firewalls/Antivirus programs or do not update.
I do not wish to dispute anyone or criticize any programs I am not familiar
with; however, I do believe you get what you pay for.

I've been running both Zone Alarm and Norton for quite some time. While the
free version do work, they lack that ability to keep updated on a continual
basis. I have registered Zone Alarm and Purchased a legal copy of Norton in
order to keep up with the update on a timely basis.

If are running a computer that is connected to the internet, then it only
seems logical to purchase legal copies of the OS, firewall and anti-virus
software to protect you from the clowns and idiots who seem the be invading
today's society.

These are my experiences with the programs that I use.
I do not comment on any other program because I do not know them
sufficiently to do so.

I use the Windows XP firewall which is apparently working very well for me
because I never had any problem that a firewall should have avoided.
I keep my fingers crossed though.

My Anti-Virus software is EZ-Antivirus.
It is not free of charge.
It uses very little system resources
Virus updates are almost daily (or at least 3 times a week)
I never got a virus, reason why I am very confident with it.
But again, I keep on lighting candles.

patient does not accept that he has 2 go the doctor; he
becomes agressive & instead abuses any helper.he
suffers from delusion of grandeur! Ha! Ha!
see a psychiatrist
to accept the truth that u don't know about narrator,

First, you need to put one or two blank lines between what you type in reply
and what you are quoting from the original message.

Without those spaces, its impossible to follow, and I for one, wont even
bother reading it.

How many times shall I have 2 post the same mesage again
& again ..
I posted my message at 6/9/03 at 10.45 a.m.

Well, If you tried posting a new message rather then replying to an
unrelated post and stop intermixing your comments with the quoted comments
of the post you replied to, AND use something that resemble ledgeble
English, or posted to a group dedicated to your native langauge. You might,
Just might get an answer

My AVG updates itself every night.
