Address list error

When I create a new message, then click on the 'To:' button to pull
up the address list, I get this message:

"The address list could not be displayed. The contacts folder
associated with this address list could not be opened. It may have
been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions."

My contacts list seems to be intact. I could understand this error if
there were no entries in the contact list.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to configure your Outlook Address Book correctly. Post your Outlook
version if you do not know how to do that. Post the steps that caused this
problem.

What version of Outlook are you using? Is the Outlook Address Book sevice
installed?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Richard M. asked:

Outlook 2003.

I had to resinstall Windows XP, but I did so on a new hard drive, due
to trying to preserve data on a previously corrupted hd. I set up the
original drive as a secondary, and was able to move the .pst file from
it to the new drive. Everything seemed to work for a few days, then
this problem occurred.

I should have left well enough alone. I wound up deleting Contacts
out of the Address Book. How do I put it back? The problem was that
I had 2 Contacts references in the Address Book. I deleted the wrong
one. I backed up outlook.pst and restored it after doing this, but
that did not correct. Apparently that info is located elsewhere.
Also, why is outlook.pst located in the Windows folder? You'd think
it would be in My Documents/Outlook or something.

No way could that have deleted Contacts. Your Contacts Folder is still
populated isn't it?
If you deleted the wrong one, add it back and remove the other.

I don't see a Contacts folder, but I still have all of my Contacts
when I click on the Contacts tab. When I select Tools>Address Book,
then select Tools>Options, there is a dropdown menu, 'Show this
address list first.' The only option available is 'Outlook Address
Book'. There used to be 2 listings for Contacts. Not there none.
There are no options available for the dropdown box 'Keep personal
addresses in'. Yet I still have all of my contacts from the
'Contacts' tab, where Mail, Calendar, Notes, Folders list, and Journal
are.

(few minutes later)

Ok, I seemed to have figured it out. In the process of going through
the different options so that I could illustrate what is in the first
paragraph, I selected 'Folders list', then saw the 'Contacts' entry.
When I right-click on 'Contacts', Contacts properties box opens with
an 'Outlook Address Book' tab. Selecting that, there is a checkbox,
'Show this folder as an email Address book' which was NOT checked.
Clicking that seemed to fix.

Close Outlook. Open Control Panel's Mail applet. Click E-mail Accounts.
Click View or change existing directories or address books. Select Outlook
Address book remove it and add it back in again.

Thanks Brian, but I managed to get it working. See paragraph 2 of my
previous post.

Duh. I guess I should read more thoroughly.
