address bar

I used to be able to search from my address bar. Yesterday that changed. I
cannot search from it. I have added nothing new. Also I used to be able to
put like yahoo.com and be able to go there. Now I 'have' to put
www.yahoo.com in to get there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the registry key for some solution:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoCo
mplete]
"Append Completion"="no"
"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

Changing "Append Completion" from "no" to "yes" will restore the function.

Mine says:
(Default) REG_SZ
Append Completion REG_SZ yes
AutoSuggest REG_SZ yes

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I think Henri was thinking of another Address-bar related problem.
E.g. launching www.yahoo.com by typing yahoo and pressing
Ctrl-Enter.

XP only has the two values that you have.
The third one was for supporting the old Advanced option:
Use Inline AutoComplete for Windows
which is apparently no longer available (but still seems to work anyway).

Can you search from the Address bar in the normal way
(by prefixing the search argument with ? go or find )?

What do you see if you activate the Search bar (e.g. press Ctrl-e)?
If it is XP's Search Companion use the options to temporarily give yourself
the so-called Classic search bar and use its Customize control to open
the AutoSearch dialog. (You may have to close all IE windows and
restart iexplore.exe in order to make this change.)

Another way to get into the same dialog (assuming your Language
preference was set to EN-US) would be to use the following link

If you can't do either of those things or if any changes you make using
them fail to stick it is probably a good indication that your search has been
hijacked. (Again, make sure that you close all instances of IE and verify
that iexplore.exe is no longer in the Task Manager Processes tab
before deciding that a change doesn't stick. E.g. press Ctrl-Shift-Esc,
Ctrl-Tab (if necessary) and then press I sufficient times to know that
iexplore.exe has gone.)

Depending on how badly your search has been hijacked you
might be able to undo it by using the Reset Web Settings...
button on the Tools, Options, Programs tab. Otherwise you
can find others' (frequently given) tips for detecting and repairing
the problem. E.g. search for tomcoyote if you are just doing
a Ctrl-Shift-F Find using OE.

Good luck
