Address bar

I am referring to what I had thought of as the history. When you click on
the arrow next to the address bar it had shown the URL's which I had viewed.
I have lost them and they show up as they should until I shut down and they
are gone again. I have tried the Help function but what help calls history
is not the url listings I want.
Any help to restore this function?

IE, tools menu, options, Content tab, autocomplete button, enable "Web Addresses"
