Address bar history gone!!

Up until yestreday I always had a drop-down menu from my address bar, that
saved me having to re-type site addresses etc.

I did a routine disk cleanup etc and I now find out that the address bar
drop-down menu has gone!! When I click the little down arrow its just a blank
white drop-down box. I can re-type everything and it will stay there for as
long as the PC is turned on. As soon as I shut the PC down and go to use it
the next day the history is gone. Its seems to be being cleared at the point
the PC is shut down!!

Anyone got any ideas??

Am using IE7 & XP Home (service pack 2)

TIA

Clearing the cache and history is a standard feature of disk cleanup
software. It sounds like the cleanup software either is changing some of the
settings, or is running on startup and clearing the history for you. If it
has changed the settings here is how to get them back for Internet Explorer:

Open Internet Explorer,
Go to Tools,
Choose Internet Options,
locate where it says browser history and choose settings
Change where it says History (days to keep pages in history) to 20 days or
so. That way if they are unused for 20 days they will drop off, while others
stay.

If this number is still large, you may want to turn off the feature to
remove cache and browser history from your disk cleanup software. This
depends on what software you are using.

You should really be in IE7 Internet explorer group to get the complete
benefit and correct answer.
Try this; On the IE7 when open click Tools on the right hand you will find
it, a drop down list will appear click on Internet Options.
On the IE properties click Content Tab and then click AutoComplete and check
the box for Autocomplete to remember the Web address.
Also click On Advanced Tab scroll down under Browsing option and check this
box:
[ ] Use Autocomplete inline .

Click Apply then Ok and Reboot the machine and see if the browser will
autocomplete for you next time.
HTH.

Thanks for that - have checked and it is still at 20 days. I think the clean
up program must be doing soemthing at start-up.

Thanks for the advice - have tried it but has not helped. The drop-down menu
becomes blank again after re-boot.

There is an option under Advanced tab say:
[ ] Empty temp files/folders on Exit try to clear that.
But the problem with that it will make the Temp file bigger and bigger until
you clear it up.

It would have been helpful if you had cited the specific
programs and procedures you used instead of simply calling it a
"routine disk cleanup".

That said, TweakUI from Microsoft has a setting to "Clear
document history on exit". It removes entries in your My Recent
Documents folder as well as web sites you typed in the address
bar and entries in the Start -> Run box. It may be that
whatever program you're using does the same thing. You might
want to check the following,

Go to Start -> Run and enter regedit in the Open box.
Click OK.
Navigate to this registry key,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right hand pane for a value named
ClearRecentDocsOnExit with a value data of 1.
If that's the case, look at any programs you used yesterday to
see if they created this value.

Here are some references you might find helpful.

Hi again

The cleaner used was Dustbuster. I have since removed the program but the
problem still exists.

That dropdown menu is associated with your browsing history - try typing in
and going to, two or more websites, and see if the arrow re-appears....
