Space bar causing chaos in Windows explorer and IE

I just did a fresh install of XP following a motherboard upgrade
and I installed and changed the area and keyboard to UK, where
i'm from, and the install went without a hitch. The only problem
is that everytime I press the space bar in IE when typing in a
window such as this one, the cursor jumps to the address bar and
then the address history drops down. If I press the space bar
in a Win Explorer window such as my docs it will still jump to
the address bar and drop down the window and show the heirarchy
of the PC such as the drives and destop etc. I hope my
explantion is not too vague! I would be very grateful if someone
could help me to resolve this as I am despairing! Thanks in
advance if you can help.

Thanks MArk for your help but I later discovered that the keyboard I was
using was at fault. I really thought it was a software problem because the
fault was very predictable in its behaviour. I appreciate the effort you
went to, to reply. It is good to know there is good helpout there when
needed. Baz

The funniest keyboard fault that I have ever come across was from a user
who phoned me begging for help logging onto our system. "I know the
password, that isn't the problem" he told me. "It's just that my
password contains three 'r's, and my keyboard has developed a fault."
"Every time I press 'r', I get between none and ten of them".
"I've been trying to logon for about two hours now!"
