Trevor

I'm trying to get an old PC I was given (running XP Home) onto the internet.

Tried adding a USB wireless adapter but fried the USB socket and it won't
work with any USB devices now.

Have added a wireless network card to an expansion slot but on restart the
PC didn't detect new hardware.

Took it out and put it in a different expansion slot but it still didn't
recognise the new hardware.

Under the device manager I found something I hadn't seen before - a button
to starty the add hardware wizard. Did this, but it still didn't come up
with the network card in the list.

What next?

Start by testing the PCI WiFi NIC in another system, XP should automatically
detect it on boot up.

It sounds like you "fried" more than just the USB connection on your
motherboard. Run some hardware diagnostics:

That old computer may only be fit for the trash bin now.
