Adding hotfixes to a network share

Amir Miller

Hi,

In the past I had a network share for windows XP, and extracted the service
pack to this share thus creating a share for Win XP + SP1 without having to
install it after the computer was installed.
My question is, can this be done for hotfixes as well?

I am using it in an unattended installation.
Note that I'm currently installing the hotfixes after windows, this is NOT
my problem.

Thanks,

Amir.

Talk about poor documentation, this article is very hard to follow.
Anyway, how do I know if the hotfixes have been installed? Should they
appear in the add/remove?

I have read this too - and found it to be somewhat helpful, but the big
question I still have is locating a definitive list of post-SP1 hotfixes. I
could do this manually I suppose (install XP with SP1 and then run Windows
Update to see what pops up) but I am secretly hoping that Microsoft (or
anyone) maintains a list of hotfixes somewhere so that I can have a
checklist to work from.

Any hints on that one?

All this is nice, but it's still not what I'm looking for.
Why do you have XP with SP1? You can always install XP and then download and
install the service pack.
You have it so you can save time.
Of course I'm installing the patches after install, but I have dozens of
installation a day and this takes up a lot of time.

Seeing hotfixes are just one file replacing another I figured there must be
a way to integrate them into the release area.
So far it seems there isn't.

The poster asked for a comprehensive list of post-SP1 updates. I
provided it.

For a long time, "slipstreaming" hotfixes was officially unsupported
by Microsoft. That is why <http://unattended.sourceforge.net/>
installs updates after installing the OS. And who cares how long it
takes if it is automated?

But now Microsoft does support slipstreaming hotfixes, after a
fashion. (Although they do not call it that.) See the Hotfix
Installation and Deployment Guide:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/hfdeploy.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/hfdeploy.asp

In particular, read about "The Combination Installation".

I followed the directions in this article. The link is in the first reply.
My question is, how do I know they were installed since there was no entry
in add/remove program and no $NtUninstallKB821557$ folder under windows.

I have never tried integrating hotfixes with the installation.
However...

Did you pass the "/n" option ("do not back up files for uninstall") to
the update installers? If so, there will be no entry in Add/Remove
Programs nor any uninstall folder.

But there should still be a registry entry for each hotfix somewhere
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates.

You should also be able to run any hotfix with the "-l" flag to see a
list of installed hotfixes.
