Adding fonts from Windows 98

I've used a font called Defoe Italic, (File name DEF059.TTF), in previous versions of Windows. When I have upgraded in the past I have just added it to the Windows/Fonts subdirectory from the previous Windows version, and it was usable in the new version. When I copy the file into the Windows XP-Pro fonts directory it tells me that the file is not a valid font file. Any suggestions. I use this for mailings.

You must INSTALL the font after you've copied it to the Fonts folder.

File, Install.....

highlight the font and click OK.

This is not an uncommon issue. It appears that XP is more sensitive to the
settings in a TT font than previous versions of Windows. If you would kindly
the offending font to magrat (underscore) garlick (at) hotmail (dot) com
(please zip it at the very least - though RAR is preferable) and I will
convert it to an XP compatible format.

Hello mister or miz Magrat... I've seen you post this offer twice
recently in different groups. What are you running the fonts through
to make them work in XP? I have dozens of fonts I've had for years
that no longer work now that I've moved "up" to XP and I can't find a
simple answer for what to do to fix them.
