adding custom "paper sizes"...

B

Brad Pears

I have a strange issue... I need to add a new custom paper size (or
"form") to a windows xp (sp2) machine for use on one of our printers. To do
this you go into printers and faxes, select the printer you want to add the
new form to, select file->server properties and add the new form. However,
when I go back to the printer to select the new form I just added, it does
not exist in the drop down selection list of paper sizes.

I am sure I have done this in the past and it did work. Any ideas what may
be going on here? Is there another way to add a new paper size for a
specific print driver if this is not going to work for me?

Thanks, Brad

I'm having the same problem. Did you ever find out how to resolve it?

In the paper sizes there should be a Custom 1 through Custom 3. You set
the dimensions in a program, such as Word. With Word, you click File,
Page Setup, Paper Size, select Custom 1-3 or Custom Size (just found
that one), and resize it to your preferred dimensions. Then select from
one of these custom sizes when you go to print.

Thanks. But that doesn't help. The application (MS Access) doesn't give me
a "custom" option when I select the printer (LQ-590).

Under Paper Size, select Custom 1. If you can't format or otherwise
resize that custom paper with Access, use another program to size that
paper. Within Access, you just change the printer's preferences to use
the paper size, Custom 1. I'm not sure it'll work, that's just how I'd
go about trying to do it.

Are you saying you have to set the paper size within Access, Page Setup,
e.g., and that it offers no custom paper sizes? In that case, you
probably need to go to an Access NG where they speak the same language..
Good luck in your quest.

What is available for paper sizes depends entirely on the printer. What you
see is not necessarily what others see. My DeskJet 692 has no custom options
and a different list of standard sizes that my HP 4550 Laser printer. And
none of them have "Custom1", "Custom2", etc.

You need to check the user manual for that printer to know for sure what to
do. The options and procedures differ from printer to printer. AFAIK, it has
nothing to do with printing from Access. Did you create the new size by
going to Printers and Faxes folder and accessing the printer's properties
there? Or did you try to do it from the Access printer dialogue?

Thanks, I stand corrected.. I guess both printers I saw the option
within were HP printers.

There are differences between HP printers, and even greater differences when
you include other brands.

Ignore MS Access for the moment. Have you created the form in Print
Server properties, and can you set it as an option in the Printer
properties? If the printer won't handle the paper size it will never
appear in the Print dialog box in an application.
