adding a domain?

Edward S. Tifft

Currently, we have five divisions to the company with one domain. One of the
divisions is requesting their own domain. I am tasked with adding this
domain. All of the servers are NT. The server currently at the requesting
division is set up as a back-up domain controller to the corporate domain.

Can someone supply me with the basic steps to accomplish this task? Do I
need to reinstall NT server to create the current server as a primary domain
controller for its own domain? I understand I have to re-create users,
groups, etc... and then create trust relationships with the corporate
domain. The corporate domain will still supply e-mail via a corporate
exchange server. They will also need to connect to a citrix server for
accessing the corporate MRP system.

Thanks in advance for any tips you may be able to provide.

If you are running Windows NT 4.0 or lower, then you must Clean install the
DC. If you are running Windows 2000 Server or 2003 Server, then you can use
the DCPromo program to back out the DC and then DCPromo again to create a
new DC in a new domain.
