Add printer - specified procedure could not be found

Clicking on Add printer does nothing. Forcing it to find
the printer in the Device Manager by scanning for hardware
changes finds the printer (LaserJet 5si), but it doesn't
install the printer - this error message is returned.

Cannot install this Hardware
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The specified procedure could not be found.

Two printers are currently installed on this machine (you
can print to them through Word et al), but in the Printers
and Faxes window, they don't show up. Just the Add
Printer icon (which again, doesn't work).
Any ideas?

sfc /scannow

b) ensure the print spooler is running - from the command prompt, type

net start spooler
