Add Harware Wizard Problem

Hi guys!
I've a problem that seems without solution
I'l tell you the full story: I plugged a usb mouse on my new Compaq R4000
notebook...and nothing happened. So I went to the "Add Hardare" wizard in
Control Panel but I got an error message telling me that another installation
is in progress and I have to wait before installing a new hardware. Obiously
no installation is in progress from my point of view. Same story for every
other Usb stuff that I tried. So I went to Device manager and I saw all the
Usb stuff i tried to install listed there with a big yellow question mark.
From there I manually installed the drivers and got all my stuff recognized
by Xp and working, but the problem on the Add Hardware wizard is still there.

Compaq Support told me that the only way to solve this problem is to
reistall Xp from scratch and the cause may have been that I wrongly
disconnected usb cable during an hardare recognition process. I admin that
could be the cause because I remember to have changed USb port...but if this
is the cause I'm very surprised by XP fragility!!!!

Is there someone that can tell me how I can make my Installation Wizard
working again_???

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

So on a clean boot your add hardware wizard says it's running? Are you
convinced it has to do w/ USB ony? If you were you may try removing the USB
Hub references in device manager (worst case you have to manually add your
mouse again). Or disabling USB all together and seeing what the hardwizard
thinks of that.

solvd with this:
in HLM\SYSTEM\SETUP changed
FactoryPreinstallInProgress from 1 to zero
AuditInProgress from 1 to zero

I suppose the vendor did not do a great job when installing O.S.
