Hardware wizard is confused here too

I recently upgraded my home pc from 98 to XP and have remaining rough edges.

I have 2 issues that may be related, and may parallel other posts in here,
but I can't tell exactly.

1. I need to add a printer. When I plug it into the USB, it isn't detected
by the Hardware wizard. So, I use the add a printer wizard, which indicates
it was 'unable to detect any Plug and Play printer' (although it is plugged
into USB slot #2). This same printer installs properly onto another XP pc,
so I know it's OK.

2. Plugging an iPOD into the same USB slot is detected, and the Hardware
Wizard kicks in. Despite the CD being in the drive, the Hardware Wizard
fails...indicating the message that it 'can not find the necessary software'.

This may be related so I'll add it in here: seems like my USB 1 and 2 roles
have changed from this XP install, as my DSL used to go into USB slot #2 and
this printer into USB slot #1 without a problem. Now the DSL can only
communicate when in slot #1, and this printer can't be added at all in slot
#2.

What to do, anybody?

Thanks for your time and assistance. SC

Go to “My Computer†>> “Properties†>> “Hardware†(tab) >> “Device Managerâ€
(button) >> in new window check after expending “Universal Serial Bus
controllers†does any of drivers show red or yellow marks at their icons. If
they do try reinstalling them by right clicking on them and choosing options
from menu.

Why are you relying on win to install your drivers, its a bad move.
USB printers usually require you to install their software 'before' you plug
the printer in..

Whilst on the subject; you visited your hw manu sites and
downloaded/installed the various winxp drivers for your sys, or did you also
rely on win to install the default drivers.
BTW Never use winupdate for drivers.
