Ad-Aware... anybody use it?

Is Ad-Aware capable of updating its database automatically, without
being prompted by the user?

I see an option for the program to "automatically look for updated
reference files upon start". However, Ad-Aware will automatically
start only upon starting up the computer. Most home PCs are still
using dial-up internet connection, and therefore there is no internet
connection upon startup. And so, Ad-Aware is unable to automatically
update itself unless the PC is on a broadband network with a
constantly active internet connection.

Would I be correct in assuming that Ad-Aware will therefore be TOTALLY
INCAPABLE of automatically updating itself unless the user manually
initiates the process himself each and everytime? The user will be
responsible to remember to update the program regularly? That seems
like a very lame oversight on Ad-Aware's part. There ought to be a
way for the program to update itself at regular intervals whenever an
internet connection is detected.

The free, standard version of Ad-Aware does not include automatic updating
and offers no support. If you desire automatic updating, you'll have
to purchase a license for "Ad-Aware Plus Edition" or "Professional".

Note:

Ad-Aware Standard is free for individual use only. For profit business
entities, governmental entities, or educational institutions, they must purchase
a valid end-user license in order to use the software.

Greetings,

You can always manually update it? :)

Also read my guide below on how to deal with spyware:
http://users.onvol.net/118226-2/xpez/articles/remove_spyware.html

Try these programs to check for any spyware that may be on your system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

Thanks and best of luck!

i just manually update my ad-aware. i've found it to be
one of the better products out there, also if you run
spybot search and destroy too, you should never have an
ad or spyware problem. its worth having to manually
update.

I have always had my pc set to auto update on connection to the net.. never
had a problem yet.. I suspect that many install updates AFTER they have
gotten a problem.. the amount of posts asking when SP2 final release will be
available suggest that they are expecting it to fix 'any and all' problems
that they presently have..

As automatic updates are a hinerance and cause no end of problems I never
use this feature on any program including windows. Anyone who uses their
computer to it's maximum capabilities by multi tasking or running programs
that use most of the system resources knows that in the middle of such apps
any auto update can and will cause problems. It is never a good idea to have
your computer conect to the internet and update at it's whim. You should
always be in control and manually update. BTW I use Adaware weekly and the
manual update is simply one click more. Don't be so lazy. }:~)

Even with an always on broadband, I simply click 'check for updates' as
a regular thing immediately on loading it. It is not a tool I would
want on an automatic start anyway

Ad-Aware (the purchased version) can be configured to automatically check for
updates when you open the program. That is a very useful feature. It can also
scan your system on a boot up if you like, but if you seldom shut your system
down, it won't get scanned very often unless you run Ad-Aware at least every day
as I do.

i use the free version of ad-aware. i don't think it has an automatic update
option. you have to click a button to update the files. maybe this option is
in the one of the paid versions.
