Ad-Aware 6.0 Question

I have just installed A-A 6.0 and am new to it. I have A-A loading when
Windows loads but I don't see any reason for doing this. Is it doing
anything to protect my system from getting the spies, etc. while I surf the
web? Should I take it out of the auto load at 'puter startup and just use
it to manually scan my 'puter every so often at my convenience? Any
pointers would certainly be appreciated.

Is it the freeware or Professional version? If freeware use manually!

You should check for updated reference files before each use.

Gerry, it's freeware. You answered and supported what I thought....it's a
manual scan and nothing else. Thanks!

Ad-aware 6.0 freeware does not offer "real time" protection like an anti-virus
application does. Ad-aware Plus & Pro have the Ad-watch plug-in which does
offer real-time protection.

As another poster indicated, if you are still not clear, post a query to Lavasoft.

Thank you for your reply. When I ran the scan, it only came up with a bunch
of cookies and 3 registry entries. I deleted the cookies and they went
automatically to quarantine. I'll delete them from there probably tomorrow.
There were 3 links to Microsoft Instant Messenger which I didn't delete. It
looks like my system is pretty clean. Thanks once again.

Wayne,
The Registry entries that the scan found, are you sure they are not Spyware?
Cookies are a fairly low-level security breach but items added or found in
your Registry need to be addressed.

There are plenty of FAQ's and info available at the Lavasoft Forum.
Make use of them and their help, if required, before you proceed.
Make note that Spyware is as pernicious as viruses and can have as
severe and impact on your O/S.

Please feel free to ask more questions here or at Lavasoft.

Regards,

I guess that the only reason I didn't delete the registry entries is
that....

I am extremely scared of messing with the registry. Ad-Aware had them
checked for delete but I unchecked them. No reason for unchecking other
than I am scared to delete. How do you or others decide whether you should
follow Ad-Aware and delete the registry items? I'm new to this stuff so
please have patience with me. I'm just trying to not do the wrong thing.

If they are in quarantine aren't they already removed? Quarantine I thought is a copy which you can restore if you can change your mind or have I misinterpreted the position?

Quarantine is "the" offending item "removed" from the O/S.

I think that they are removed but I'm not sure. Heck, I wanted Ad-Aware to
be much like my NAV and just do it automatically but it doesn't appear so.
But for 0$, the price is right. I'm not complaining.

Bite the bullet - do it. There is only one reg entry that AdAware finds that
is 'wrong', Alexa. Run spybot search and destroy also, that will sort out
the alexa entries.

Ad-aware is not forcing "you" to mess with your Registry.
The items that Ad-aware detected *may* be put on the "ignore" list if you
are unsure that the file or files are valid.
Please post your concerns to the Lavasoft Forum :-)
They will be able to help you further.

I bit the bullet late last night and got rid of the reg entries and no "ill
effect" yet. Thanks for the push.
