ActiveX won't initiate even though enabled...

Hi,

I am a fairly competent computer user, but since using SP2, ActiveX has not
worked in IE even though it is enabled (I am positive on this) in the
Internet settings. I have set the security settings to medium and for
whatever reason (I guess extra security) I cannot set it to "low" but I did
verify that all ActiveX options are for enabled that should be.

Also, I have no ad-blockers and I disabled pop-up blocking. I also turned
off the XP SP2 firewall just to be sure that was not a factor. I do tend to
disable services I probably (or set them to manual) don't need so if one is
necessary for ActiveX then that is a possibility. I have also run Ad-Aware
(latest ad-lists) and cleaned all possible spyware.

I really don't run much on my computer in the way of add-ons that could
interfere with browsing and I have scanned my computer with two different
up-to-date virus scanners. Actually, the websites that I want to work are
online virus scanners that use ActiveX and because of this problem, I cannot,
so it is very important that I solve this problem. I have no other computer
issues at this time, so mainly the ActiveX is the problem, and I see other
SP2 users also face similar problems. And I would very much like to do a
/scannow with a XP/SP2 cd but I cannot use my MSDN subscription to download
it because ActiveX doesn't work! So I really could use some help!

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

SP2 has tightened up the Security settings for the Internet Zone so it
will not go below Medium, with Active X disabled. You *can* use the
Custom button and change the selections, but that leaves you open to
malware pages. I suggest rather that you take Trusted Sites and click
Sites, then enter the URLs of sites that you trust in there.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, but still no avail. The sites we are talking about
aren't secure sites, they are just websites with ActiveX content.

For instance, if I try to go http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp (an ActiveX
test) all I see is a box with a red x in the corner. Even if I add it to my
trusted sites (unchecking the box in the dialog about secure https), I still
cannot load ActiveX. There is something fundamentally wrong here with ActiveX
but I cannot figure out what it is.

I have even run SFC and tried browsing to ActiveX sites but that did not work.
Do I have to reinstall XP with SP2??? Is that really my only option???

Thanks and Happy New Year,
Drew

You may well still be best to make them Trusted sites. When adding,
uncheck the box relating to secure sites

Hi,

Thanks for replying once again, but from another forum I discovered that the
problem was NOD32 Antivirus messing up ActiveX and so all my efforts would
have gotten me nowhere unless I uninstalled it. So that's just what I did,
and ActiveX is back and working!

Hope there is a fix for NOD32 sometime because it is a decent antivirus.
