How do I delete an ActiveX program?

I went to emsisoft.com to install their ActiveX online malware scanner
a while back. Now I went back there and there seems to be a problem
with it, I get an access violation error when it tries to load the
ActiveX app. How do I delete the ActiveX program, so that I can try
to redownload it again?

How to Remove an ActiveX Control in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154850

<MS::>
Internet Explorer 4.x or Later (All Platforms)
Internet Explorer 4.x or later, include the Occache.dll file, which is used
to enumerate, update, and safely uninstall ActiveX controls using a "shell
folder."

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click
Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.
2. If the ActiveX control you want to remove appears in the list of
installed programs, click the ActiveX control, click Add/Remove, and then
follow the instructions on the screen. If the ActiveX control does not appear
in the list of installed programs, continue with the next step.
3. In Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer, double-click the
Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder or the Winnt\Downloaded Program Files
folder, right-click the ActiveX control you want to remove, and then click
Remove.
4. When you are prompted to remove the ActiveX control, click Yes.

They don't provide a download page that also does NOT employ their AX
control which is only applicable to running the local client to do a
scan of your host?

Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage add-ons

Do you see their AX control listed there? If so, its file should be
listed. See if deregistering it works.

regsvr32.exe /u <filename>

What did THEY say when you ask them on how to uninstall their AX
control? Try asking in their forums yet which has a community more
focused on that particular product?

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/support/contact/

You probably should contact them, anyway, just to bitch that they don't
provide uninstallation instructions for their AX control.

In the future, you might want to use a utility that monitors changes to
your host before and after an install so you can later use that utility
to uninstall that product (whether or not it adds an entry for
Add/Remove Programs). I use Zsoft Uninstaller. Record before doing the
install, do the install, reboot if needed, load the program, exit the
program, and then analyze the install. You should close other
applications to prevent them from making changes to your host during the
install for a different program which would then have those changes
recorded for that other program's install - and which means you could
lose data if you uninstall all changes (i.e., automatic uninstall
instead of prompting you to allow/disallow a removal).

FYI:
There aren't any 'good' on-line scanners out there!
On-line scanners are the most unsafe and next to useless. Because by the
time you've started your infected Windows and connected to the Internet via
this infected code base, and start to look for scanning sites through
infected DNS, you are almost certain to have the malware perfectly
positioned to overrule your attempts to clean it. What happens if active
malware is found? Don't expect that the on-line scanner will do anything
about it. Most of them are just just marketing tools for selling you their
products. Quite often, malware removal on the NT based OS (Win 2K and XP)
is far from easy. Sometimes a (good) resident AV can deal with it in Safe
Mode.

Other reasons to stay away from on-line scanners are:
1. You have to use IE on very low security setting - ActiveX is required.
2. Many users will lower security in the Internet Zone to use the service
and then forget to set the Internet Zone back to highest possible security
- which is the only way that IE should be set.
3.Scanning should be performed while off-line.
4.Vulnerabilities in several virus scanners
http://www.heise-online.co.uk/secur...n-several-virus-scanners-Update--/news/112301

Also, according to Trend Micro, a surfer using a search engine such as
Google, with a search string such as, ´free online virus scan by Trend
Micro¡, can end up on a spoofed version of HouseCall by clicking the link
returned by Google. Not surprisingly, the spoofed site informs users their
computers are infected with malware, and then teases them to purchase a
fake anti-virus application in order to remove the fake threat.

Therefore:
'Stand-Alone' Anti-Virus scanning tools are *impressively better and
safer*, because you don't have to be on-line to use them (they have no
dependencies on using a web browser to perform their function), and they
also can be used in Safe Mode.
