Active Directory Malfunctioning

D

Dinendra

Hi,
I cannot access any AD related consoles(AD Users and
Computers/AD Sites and Services etc) saying an Error msg
with a Red color cross mark. The Error message is,

"Naming information cannot be located because:
The target principal name is incorrect.
Contact your system administrator to verify that your
domain is properly configured and is currently online."

And we have the option Press OK. After pressing the OK
button, the console open but only the root(Active
Directory Sites and Services, Acitve Directory Users and
Computers) appeares with a red color cross. I can't expand
the content of that console.

users are unable to login to the domain. This is an
additional DC for domain and the root server (FSMO holder)
is located in our head office. This server is also a
Global catelog to our office/site.

What could be the reason for this?
Do i have to demote and promote the server again?
Please advice

Dinendra,

This is a fairly generic error message. Please look at the following KB
articles and see if one of these resolves the problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329887

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=257346

The message that you are getting could indicated that DNS is not set
up/working correctly on the problem DC.

You might also want to install the Windows 2000 support tools on the problem
DC. They come on the Windows 2000 install CD. Go to the root of the CD and
find a folder called Support - then Tools - then run setup.exe.

Once these are installed you can run dcdiag and netdiag from a command
prompt and they should provide you with more information regarding what is
broken.

I hope this helps.
