Moving DCs between sites

D

Dinendra

Hi,

I have 3 sites in 3 different subnets in the same Active
directory domain(Single Forest) mydomain.local.

Here is the site configurations

Site Subnet DCs
site 1 10.242.0.0/24 Srv1(Root DC), Srv2(Add DC)
site 2 10.242.1.0/24 Srv3(Add DC)
Site 3 10.242.2.0/23 Srv4(Add DC), Srv_1(Child DC)

In site 1, it has the root server of the forest and in all
other sites including the main site, there is a additions
domain controller which is a global catelog for each site.
Only in Site 3, there a child domain called
child.mydomain.local and it has only 1 domain controller
for that child domain(Srv_1). This is the current setup.

My requirement is, i need to move the servers Srv1, Srv2,
Srv3 in site 1 and site 2 to Site 3 (Subnet 10.242.2.0/23)
without damaging my current Active directory structure.

Appreciate if you can help me ASAP.
Please include all the necessary steps that i should take
to complete this process.

Thanks & Regards

Dinendra

Thanks for the info.
Is it possible to move the root server in a forest to a
different subnet?
First do i have to move the Root server FSMO roles to a
additional DC in the target subnet.

Plase advice

Yes, no problem with that. The server will reregister its records when it
will startup. Maybe it will take some time for DNS information to replicate,
but otherwise you will be fine. Are you planning to move it within the same
site or to a different site ?

Yes the root server will be moved to a different
Site/Subnet.
* Do i need to transfer the FSMO roles in the root server
to a additional DC in the target site? or can i move the
root server without transfering the FSMO roles?

Pls advice

You don't have to transfer FSMO roles to another server. Your FSMO roles
will not be affected.
