Active Desktop - Scheduled Update

F

Frank J. Reda

I've used active desktop for years for things like web cam (stills) and
weather radar and such. I used these desktop items in conjunction with the
scheduled update feature (update every fifteen minutes). It worked very
nicely for a long time, but stopped working sometime last year. I played
with the scheduled update for a while and then gave up.

Recently, I had the opportunity to re-install Windows XP. When I did, I put
all the active desktop content back and the scheduled updates started
working again! (Yay!) That is, until I downloaded a boatload of security
fixes. It seems that one of the security fixes breaks the scheduled update
feature of active desktop content. (Boo!)

Has anyone else witnessed this? Is there a fix?

Active Desktop...is still available on 32-bit versions of...Windows XP SP2
[with IE7 installed] with reduced functionality. The following features have
changed:

- *Synchronization of Active Desktop with online content is no longer
supported.*
- The ability to restore Active Desktop if software or the operating system
stops responding is no longer supported.
- The Active Desktop item’s window does not show the title of the webpage
(it shows the address of the webpage).
- For a webpage restricted by Content Advisor, the Action Cancelled page is
not displayed.

OK - I didn't get the link between IE7 and Active Desktop, but now it makes
sense. Guess I'll be using Firefox by default from now on.

Thank you to all who replied.

Hello Folks,

I experienced the same problem immediately after installing IE 7 to resolve
an issue with connecting to a web interface for a network switch. I setup
traffic cam images to update every 10 minutes on a schedule. Then suddenly
they stopped working. Through a process of elimination I discovered it was a
result of the installation of IE 7. The issue indicates more of Was there
any intentions to replace Active Desktop Items with something else?

Active Desktop Items and its associated schedules seems to be more broken
and forgotten as a result of the new version of IE. You have the ability to
create a schedule but it will not save. That, to me is a sign of a bug and
not a discontinued feature.

Sorry about my inablility to form complete thoughts and maintaining
continuity. A result of program troubleshooting without breaks.

Many months ago, I setup traffic cam images and Doppler Radar maps to update
every 10 minutes on a schedule. Then, I experienced the same problem

interface for a network switch. Then, I immediately noticed that they

Also, forgot that the "Set as Desktop Item..." is no longer available in the
shortcut menu when right-clicking on items on a webpage.
