Scheduled Tasks program is broken

I am running XP-pro (oem) SP-2, and the Scheduled Tasks function no longer
works. The old tasks I had set up don't work anymore, and if I click on Add
Scheduled Task the entire system hangs. After 30 seconds to a minute I
finally use task manager to end the task. When I do all the icons on the
desktop refresh, and several in the system tray disappear. How can I fix
this problem?

Check that the "Scheduled Tasks" service is running and that it's set to automatic.

To open services, open the Run box and enter:
%WinDir%\system32\mmc.exe %WinDir%\SYSTEM32\services.msc

Thanks for your reply.
I found "Task Scheduler" where you said to look, and it says that it is
started, and it is set to automatic. Any other ideas? It used to work just
fine.

Check when the scheduled tasks last worked, then use System Restore to
return Windows to a day before that date.

Thanks Pegasus. Problem is that I am just now really needing for it to work
and getting around to trying to fix it. But it actually quit working over a
year ago and all those restore points have long disappeared.

This would be an incentive to fix minor problems immediately instead of
waiting until they become big issues. :-[

AFAIR, the Task Scheduler is part of Internet Explorer, so perhaps
re-installing IE might fix the problem.

In services, have you tried turning off scheduled tasks, rebooting and
turning them back on?
Control panel--administrative tools--services---highlight task scheduler--on
left side stop the service.
Reboot ----go back and restart the service.

Thanks. I tried that and I guess that the boot up process automatically
turned it back on again. Anyhow, whatever happened it is working now.

Have a great day.
